Girls Desk and Bookshelf REDO

After being pregnant and dealing with some family health issues I'm happy to say I'M FINALLY BACK TO PAINTING FURNITURE!!! :)

Here are my first projects back.

I got this desk and chair at the local Dig n Save thrift store. I want to say the desk was $4 and the chair, $2. I love the desk because it opens up for storage. The bookshelf I got at a garage sale for $5 and it's wood except for the back piece. 

Boring beat up desk

Homemade chalk paint

Tape where legs meet desk

Chalk paint legs and let dry. Top with furniture wax after completely dry. Let air out in garage or outside after wax because it really smells.

Basic kids chair

Primed with Zinsser 1,2,3 spray primer

All done!

Dresser

Sanded dresser. Wipe down with a cloth to remove dust.

Spray paint. Let dry. Top with furniture wax, let air dry. Add books :)

Chair Redo

 I bought this chair at Dig n' Save for $5. I had to use wood glue to fix a few small spots but overall it was in good shape. Here's what I had to do.

Flip chair over and unscrew the seat.

Seat is off!

One coat of chalk paint.

Two coats of paint. I did three coats all together just because I wanted it pure white.

Lay fabric($8.99/yd at Hobby Lobby, I missed the sale price and was too impatient to wait until it went on sale again) over the seat. Figure out where you want the print to lay on the seat. 

Fold fabric around the seat and staple using a staple gun. Make sure to pull it tight and that your fabric print stays where you want it. 

 

I had to cut some fabric out to avoid bulk around the corners. 

This is how I did the corners. It usually takes a couple tries to get it right. 

Screw the seat back in and Ta Da! I plan on protecting it with clear furniture wax but I'm waiting for the weather to get nicer so I can do it in my garage since it is smelly stuff.

Mini Table

This little table cost me $2 and was an afterthought while shopping at my favorite thrift store for furniture. I knew I wanted to do the color Swiss Cream by Behr(made into chalk paint by adding plaster mixed with water) for the legs(I had some left from when I painted our bathroom with it) but I wasn't sure what color I wanted for the top. Initially I painted it Orange Spice by Behr because I had the color sample on hand. 

It just didn't look the way I was imagining it so I went to our local hardware store to get some paint samples. Turns out their samples are quart size in Satin for $4.99! I chose the color Kumquat.

Tile Coasters, Finally!

I was wandering around Home Depot and spotted the 4x4 tiles I have been meaning to buy forever. I then got some scrapbook paper from Hobby Lobby(50% off!), cute it to size and Mod Podged it on. Add felt to the bottom to keep the tiles from scratching your table. Cute coasters for my newly redecorated basement.

Lay the tile on the felt.

Trace with a fabric marker or any marker. Cut just inside the lines so the felt will be slightly smaller than your tile. 

Put Mod Podge on your tile.

Carefully lay your felt on and smooth it out. Lay it felt side down until it dries.

Mini Vegan Cupcakes

I have been a vegetarian for a long time but I have recently turned Vegan. My favorite Vegan cookbook is Chloe Coscarelli's. I made these ones for my birthday using most of her recipe for her Fluffy Coconut Cupakes that can be found at http://chefchloe.com/sweets/fluffy-coconut-cupcakes.html. I just used non-hydrogenated shortening and almond milk in the frosting instead of un-refined coconut oil and coconut milk. They tasted like sugar cookies! Yum!

$12 Dresser Transformation

Before:

I got this dresser at a garage sale across the street for $12 during the summer. The top of it was detached and broken but I just loved the shape so I had to get it. Finally in November we had some nice weather here so I decided it was time to try CHALK PAINT! It was a tight month financially and I like to use what I already have so I ventured to our basement to see what paint the previous owners had left. I found a green that they had used in the master bedroom and decided to use it. First I used wood glue to fix the broken top piece then attached it to the base. I then followed chalk paint instructions from http://www.iheartnaptime.net/chalk-paint/ I didn't do any distressing on my piece. I like distressing but it's not really was going for.

Good Night Moon Baby Shower

My friend and I threw a Good Night Moon baby shower for a friend this past weekend. I made a banner using cardstock and the same stencils, twine and acrylic paint I used for my daughter's candy themed birthday party. Another friend made the the amazing cow and moon which looks perfect. 

We also wanted to have a table with a lamp, comb, brush and a bowl of mush just like in the book. I had an end table at my house that I bought at a garage sale this summer so at the last second I decided to paint it yellow.

 I started painting the top of the table when was like, Wait! I need to take a "before" pic!

 Here is the table all primed. I used a foam roller for the top and a foam brush for the other parts. I just did it really fast since the shower was the next day.

 I then sprayed the table with Rustoleum Painters Touch in Marigold which I had already bought to paint some wooden stars I had gotten at Hobby Lobby(see the outlines on the box).

The finished table! I also made a diaper cake using pre-painted stars from Hobby Lobby(.89 ea) and ribbon that was on sale for 1.99/roll for each color. We also used the ribbon to hang the larger spray painted stars(.99 ea) from the curtain rod in the living room. I didn't get a pic of this though :/ Now I just need to find a place in my home for this great accent piece of furniture. I'll post a pic once I find one!
